A Review of Poems and Prayers for Easter by Sophie Piper

What a lovely compilation of poems for children! Beautifully illustrated, the book features noteworthy poets including Langston Hughes, William Wordsworth and William Blake as well as the familiar African American spiritual “Were You There When They Crucified My Lord?”

Piper’s poems such as The Easter Garden, Resurrection, The Tree of Thorns, and All Things Right reveal profound truths in simple images.

The book includes poems about spring and new life and there are several on the Easter bunny, a creature which I personally dislike. However, all in all, the book allows children to experience Lent through poems, providing both a literary and a reflective way to develop a child’s heart response to the great love of Jesus through his death and resurrection on our behalf.

I would include this in my library of Lenten resources for children.
