An Advent Poem: Song of the Kingdom Come

Every Christmas we look back at Jesus’ first coming to earth and consider the mystery of the Incarnation and its world-changing consequences. We also look forward to the Second Advent, when Christ returns to earth as King, establishing the longed-for Promised Land, the Kingdom of God where all things broken will be restored. With a nod, and perhaps an apology to Les Miserables’ well-known song, “Can you hear the people sing?” here are my words of longing for this day.

SONG OF THE KINGDOM COME

by Cynthia S Fischer, 2022

Can you hear the Lion roar Can you see his crown ablaze?

Who has abolished sin and death? The Night has turned to Day.

It is the Voice of Him who comes, It is the Ancient Promised One,

The Lamb now Lion reigns. The Light of Light has come.

Can you hear the trumpet blast Can you see the people bow?

Heralding the Son of God who’s come? They are worshipping the One.

He is the glory and all power, He is the Slain Lamb alive.

The Majesty on High. The Forgiver of Sins is come.

Do you hear the souls that weep Will you be ready when He comes

The homeless and the poor? Sowing seeds of Kingdom love?

It is the pining of the people for Serving the naked and the poor,

The Prince of Peace is come. Who mirror Christ the Son?

Can you hear the gavel pound? Do you hear the people sing?

It is the wrath of justice served. It is the Song of Freedom Come.

It is the moment when all evil dies, It is the chorus of the hearts,

The Righteous Judge is come. Who will not be slaves to sin.

Chorus:

When the Song of Kingdom comes

And the Son of God descends.

There is a world about to start.

When this Day breaks forth.
